Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.

Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.

Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results. You should complete the course of Doxycycline as your doctor prescribes for better results. Some common side effects of Doxycycline are nausea (feeling or being sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. Please consult your doctor if these side effects become troublesome.

Doxycycline is pregnancy category D (high risk) medicines, so its use in pregnant and nursing mothers is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause teeth staining (yellow-grey-brown). Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness when taken along with Doxycycline. Before using Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you ever had an allergy to Doxycycline, have kidney problems, liver problems, swollen food pipe (esophagitis) or muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). You should consume plenty of fluid during your day. Do not take more than one dose of Doxycycline in a day.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all your medical conditions, including if you:

• Have ever had an allergic reaction to doxycycline, minocycline, cetylbutylacetic acid or any other ingredients of the product. This is a common problem with different formulations of Doxycycline. If you are an over the counter doctor, don’t take Doxycycline unless recommended by your doctor.

• Have a condition called liver disease that affects the shape, color or size of the liver.
• Are taking other medicines to treat bacterial infections, as they may prevent Doxycycline from being completely effective.
• Have ever had severe allergic reactions to any other antibiotics such as penicillin, cephalosporins or polypeptides. Doxycycline may rarely cause allergic reactions.
• Have ever had severe liver problems.
• Have ever had severe kidney problems.
• Have ever had a long-lasting (more than 4 weeks) irregular heartbeat, fainting or breathing problems.
• Are currently pregnant or intend to become pregnant.

Doxycycline may cause dizziness and light-headedness. So before you start to feel drowsy or sleepy, let your doctor know about any allergies you may have.
